Out of The Zone : Part 1

I have been finding the silver bullet to productivity and during my quest I found picked up some very useful tips from articles and websites. I started venturing into the world of productivity just a year ago; every piece of information forms a pathway to my current lifestyle. It was difficult to balance between study and passions, and my life was turning up side down before I realized it. Most of my time was spent on co-curriculum activities and computer, soon there was no time left for my study. Suddenly it dawned on me that it is time to steer my own life. Google is my best friend to ask fro advice whenever I have a question. My bookmark bean to be filled with productivity blog like Lifehacker, hackCollege, ZenHabits and 99Percent. Let's cut to the chase and starts with my first tip.

1. Control your sleep pattern

Sleep has been underrated is today's society. Cutting the your sleep time is not going to help you accomplish your tasks. In contrast, lack of sleep will decrease productivity. How do shape your sleep cycle for optimum producivity ? Firstly, you have to sleep at the same time every day to reset your sleep cycle. Avoid tuning to the television or computers before you sleep to enjoy a comfortable sleep. Besides that, wake up early in the morning to plan your day ahead. There is something in the morning air that seems to boost my performance. Many productivity guru claims that waking up early is a great ritual to increase productivity. i will leave something for the next post.

Conquest of Digital Books

Imagine a day when the school library is  totally empty, the scent of new books no longer swirl in the air.Walking into a library where everyone is holding a Kindle or Apple Ipad; will this happen in the future ? Digital books have widen the dominance on today's modern society who seems to constantly connected to the World Wide Web. Many debates have been fought to determine the effect of digital books on the sales of normal book in market. Many people find digital books more attractive because of their portability; it is less heavy compared to some  thick hardcover book which weighs more than your laptop or Kindle. The presence of digital book creates a window for the public to have a preview of the real book. This allows people to enjoy something with every pennies they spent. Still remember the day when you bought a book with carefully crafted cover but totally kill you with its content. Now with digital books, you can finally buy a book which will satisfy your needs. In a nutshell, I never have anything against books on your book shelves, I actually have some books i enjoyed really much and they are still sitting faithfully on my shelves.

The Unortodox Buildings

Besides programming, sometimes I also surf the web to find magnificent photos. There are tons of website that showcase one of the finest collection of photos. Be it landscape, abstract, architecture or even monotone photos. Recently i stumbled across a nice collection of architecture photos; it suddenly dawn on me that the creativity of human being is ever expanding. For example, who says a building must be designed in geometrical shapes. many great architects have try to incorporate organic shapes into their projects. I really admire those architects  who are brave to break the norms. Their effort and contribution should be acknowledged and shared to the online community. May you have a wonderful experience gazing through the pictures below:

Web Design : Dive into HTML 5 Now !!!

Finally I am able to squeeze some time to blog about my latest adventure into the world of web design. It has 6 months since the last time I ever opened up my Dreamweaver. I figure out maybe it is time to give HTML 5 a try. HTML 5 has some of the coolest features like <header>, <article>, <audio> and <video>. Finally we can get rid of the <div> tag for everything we wanted to do. I just downloaded the book by Mark Pilgrim on HTML 5. The book has been a good reference and tutorial to code in HTML 5.Trust me, web designers out there should really try HTML 5. It will really increase your productivity and make your code more meaningful. You no longer need to comment every <div> container to distinguish between your main body, header and footer.
Just started with Dive into HTML 5. Is this a good guide to start learning HTML 5 ??

Productivity: Part 1

Do you find it hard to juggle between work and interests ? In my scenario, juggling between study and computer programming. I have searched high and low to solve my problem. There are various websites that are useful for those who wanted to be productive. There are:

1. 99Percent
2. ZenHabits

Besides that, i would like to share with you an extract from "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Steven R.Covey. In order to be productive, one has to Be Proactive. You have to do something because you want to and not because of conditions and environment. Your priorities should be placed on tasks that would benefit you and not from your problems. Sometimes it is ok to say "No" to make room for your own tasks. Finally, I would like to end this post with a saying by Eleanor Roosevelt:

"No one can hurt you without your consent"
Just want share with u guys some geeky jokes I found on makeuseof.com:
1. The box said ‘Requires Windows Vista or better’. So I installed LINUX.
2. Computers are like air conditioners: they stop working when you open Windows.
3. I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.'
4. Michael Sinz: “Programming is like sex, one mistake and you have to support it for the rest of your life.”
5. Programmers are tools for converting caffeine into code.
6. Hacking is like sex. You get in, you get out, and hope that you didn’t leave something that can be traced back to you.

How Secure Is Your Password ?

As promised, I will talk about how to secure your password today using 2 password manager: Keepass and LastPass. Why do you need a password manager ? Can't you just use one single password for all the websites. The answer is simple, if someone manages to assess your password, then all your accounts will be vulnerable. Imagine if someone has the key to your house, he will have the privilege to get everything you have. Therefore, USE A PASSWORD MANAGER TODAY.

1. Keepass

This piece of baby is the silver bullet to your problem. i have used it for several years now, and it has never failed me. Keepass is also available in portable version which means you can your database of passwords wherever you go. Let's get started on how to setup your password manager:

  1. Install Keepass here
  2. Go to File > New to create a new database
  3. You will be prompt create a master password, make sure you choose a memorable one
  4. I don't recommend you to use the key file because sometimes you might lose it
  5. To create a password, just click on new entry button.
  6. Fill in your username and password.
  7. Watch the video below

    2. Last Pass

You can consider Last Pass because of its superior browser integration. My favorite feature is the auto-fill feature which allows Last Pass to fill in your login session automatically.

    1. Install LastPass here
    2. Set your master password
    3. Go to preference and from here you can assess the hot keys to auto-fill your password
    4. Watch the video below
